PhD Scholarship - Influence of hydrogen on metallic components for clean energy

This is a challenging research project with the aim for deep basic understanding of the influence of hydrogen (H) on turbogenerator components. The project is sponsored by Alstom Power Systems, Birr Switzerland. The project is based at The University of Queensland (UQ), with close interaction with Alstom and Griffith University (GU). The project is in the centre of the core business of Alstom. It is expected to lead to better and more efficient turbogenerators in line with the Alstom strategy of combining improved technical performance, economic performance and environmental performance.

The role. At UQ, the experimental program into the H influence will include (i) testing steels under conditions of electrolytic charging whilst subjected to (slowly) linearly increasing stress test, and (ii) measuring H permeation and diffusion through the steels using an electrolytic permeation cell. Five months in year two will be spent as follows: (i) one month in the Alstom turbogenerator R&D Department and (ii) four months in the Alstom Laboratories in Baden Switzerland measuring fatigue properties of steels under electrolytic charging conditions. Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy to study H-trap interactions will be carried out at GU.

The person. The candidate should have a four-year bachelors degree with first class honours in materials, mechanical, chemical engineering or physics and have an intense interest in service degradation of materials properties. Competences that will be developed include electrochemistry, corrosion, mechanical metallurgy and structural integrity evaluation; and experimental skills in electrochemistry and mechanical property testing. The candidate should have the confidence to be able to work independently and cooperatively, both at UQ and in Switzerland, and to be able to rapidly develop skills in a challenging project. The candidate must have excellent skills in written and spoken English language expression. The minimum level required to enrol at UQ is to achieve at least 6.5 overall and 6.0 in the writing test of IELTS (or equivalent test).

Remuneration. The scholarship is at the APAI rate (currently $AUD27,222 per year) plus up to $AUD8,000 p.a. for an exceptional candidate. APAI conditions of award are found at http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/apai.
